The e-Aadhaar password format
When you download e-Aadhaar from UIDAI’s website or app, the PDF is locked with a password made from two things:
- the first four letters of your name, as printed on your Aadhaar, in CAPITAL letters;
- your year of birth, as four digits.
Spaces are ignored, and anything else counts as a letter, including a full stop after an initial:
| Name on Aadhaar | Year of birth | Password |
|---|---|---|
| Rahul Kumar | 1990 | RAHU1990 |
| Sai Kumar | 1990 | SAIK1990 |
| P. Kumar | 1990 | P.KU1990 |
| Ria | 1990 | RIA1990 |
Type your name and year into the boxes on this page and the password is built for you, the same way.
If it says the password is wrong
- Check the name as it appears on the Aadhaar, not as you usually write it. If the card says “Mohd Rafi”, the password starts MOHD, even if you always write “Mohammed”.
- Check for an initial at the start. “K Ramesh” becomes KRAM, and “K. Ramesh” becomes K.RA.
- Use the year of birth on your Aadhaar, even if a different date is on your other documents.
- Capitals matter. RAHU1990 works; Rahu1990 doesn’t.
Masked Aadhaar: share less
When you download e-Aadhaar, UIDAI offers a masked version, which shows only the last four digits of your Aadhaar number. For hotel check-ins and other places that just want proof of identity, the masked copy is usually enough. Keep the full copy for the places that really need the number.
Before sending it anywhere
An unlocked Aadhaar copy is easy to misuse if it leaks. Two habits help:
- Add a watermark with who it’s for, the purpose and the date, like “For XYZ Bank KYC only, 22/10/2026”.
- Delete the unlocked copy from Downloads once you’ve sent or uploaded it.
Private by design
Your Aadhaar PDF and its password are opened by your own browser, on your device, and never uploaded. Nothing is saved after you leave the page. If the PDF is still too big for a form after unlocking, Compress PDF brings it under the limit.
