When you need a picture instead of a PDF
Plenty of places take images but not PDFs:
- upload forms that only accept “JPG/JPEG”;
- a WhatsApp or Instagram status, a story, a profile post;
- slides in PowerPoint, Keynote or Google Slides, where a picture of a page is easier to place than a PDF;
- the Photos app on your phone, where a boarding pass, ticket or QR code is quicker to find than in Files.
This page draws each page of the PDF on your device and saves it as a JPG.
Which quality to pick
| Setting | An A4 page becomes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard, 150 DPI | 1240 × 1754 pixels | phones, chat apps, email |
| High, 200 DPI | 1654 × 2339 pixels | most things: sharp on a laptop, fine to print |
| Print, 300 DPI | 2480 × 3508 pixels | printing, or zooming into small print |
High is the default because it reads well zoomed in on a phone without making files too heavy. A page of text at High is usually a few hundred KB. Pages with photos are bigger.
Very large pages, like posters or engineering drawings, are capped at about 16 million pixels so phone browsers can still draw them.
Only some pages
Under More options, Choose pages takes numbers and ranges like 1, 2-4 or 1-3, 7. Useful when the form wants “the first page of your passport PDF” as a JPG, or when you only need the page with the QR code.
What you download
Each image is named after the PDF and its page: ticket-page-01.jpg, ticket-page-02.jpg and so on. The zero is there so page 10 doesn’t sort before page 2. Several images come in one .zip. On an iPhone, tap the .zip in the Files app to unpack it; on Android, open it in Files and press Extract.
One long image instead
“One long image” stacks every page into a single tall picture, like scrolling through the PDF, which is handy for chats. PDF to long image explains its limits and how to send it without blurring.
JPG or PNG?
JPG is right for most documents, and for anything with photos or scans in it. For slides, charts and diagrams with flat colours and thin lines, PDF to PNG keeps every edge perfectly clean. To go the other way and turn photos into a PDF, use JPG to PDF.
