Two different kinds of PDF lock
A password to open it. The PDF asks for a password before it shows anything. Bank statements, e-Aadhaar, salary slips, insurance policies and tax documents usually come like this. To unlock one, you need that password once. After that you get a copy that opens without it.
A lock on printing or copying. The PDF opens normally, but Print is greyed out, or you can’t select text. That kind needs no password here: drop the file and press Unlock PDF.
The page tells you which kind you have as soon as you drop the file. If there’s no lock at all, it says so, and there’s nothing to remove.
Why people unlock their own files
- Typing a password every time you open a statement gets old fast.
- Many upload forms, for loans, visas or tax returns, can’t read a locked PDF and reject it with an unhelpful error.
- Many PDF apps can’t edit, combine or shrink a locked file.
- Accountants and family members you share documents with shouldn’t need a password from you each time.
We don’t crack passwords
This page removes a password you know. It doesn’t guess or break one you’ve forgotten, and no honest tool can do that quickly for a modern PDF. If you’ve lost the password, ask whoever sent the file for a new copy. Banks and most portals let you download the document again.
Use it only on files you have the right to open: your own documents, or ones shared with you along with their password.
Your password stays with you
The password is used by your own browser to open the file, on your device. It’s never sent to us or stored anywhere, and neither is the PDF. That’s a real difference from tools that upload the file: there, the unlocked copy and the password pass through someone else’s computer.
After unlocking
You download a copy named like statement-unlocked.pdf. Your original, still locked, stays where it was.
An unlocked copy can be opened by anyone who gets it, so keep it somewhere private, and delete it from Downloads once it’s uploaded. If you need it locked again, with a password of your choosing, use Protect PDF.
For two common cases there are pages with specific help: bank and card statements, and the e-Aadhaar PDF password.
